Online anger management classes: what courts have published about format
Two courts are quoted here and they bind only their own counties. This is not legal advice and cannot tell you what your court will accept.
Whether an online class is allowed is decided by the court or agency that issued your order — not by the class provider, and not by this site. Courts publish different rules, and two of them are quoted below in full.
One court sets a test you can actually check
Thurston County, Washington, publishes a condition about the kind of online course it will take:
Online courses will only be accepted by the court if the course is interactive and instructor led. All other online completions will not be accepted
That is a test you can put to a provider before paying: is the course interactive, and is it instructor led? A self-paced course that issues a certificate at the end does not meet the condition that court published.
Another court makes it depend on the order itself
A California court’s family-court guidance makes online classes conditional on the order naming them:
Online Classes (minimum of 12 weeks - and only if specifically ordered by the Court; a high conflict series is also offered, if ordered)
Note who that guidance was written for. It sits under a family-court heading and describes parents in a custody matter. If your own case is a criminal or probation matter, it is not about you — it is evidence that courts set their own conditions, not evidence of what yours requires.
Appearing on a court’s list is not acceptance
Some courts publish provider lists, and those lists have begun to include remote options. It is worth knowing what the courts say about the lists themselves:
The Riverside Superior Court has not and does not screen or evaluate the providers, their facilities, or the information they have listed, nor have we verified any of the information posted.
A provider on an unscreened list has not been checked by that court. The list is a convenience, and the court says so.
What to do with this
- Read your order and see whether it names a format.
- If it does not, ask the court or probation officer named on it.
- If you are told an online class is acceptable, ask what the class must include — Thurston County’s published condition is a reasonable thing to ask about anywhere.
Nothing here is legal advice, and none of it tells you what your court will accept.
